This week’s episode of Marshals offered more insight into the death of Kelsey Asbille‘s Yellowstone character Monica.
Her death was confirmed in the series premiere earlier in the season, and in the Sunday (April 5) episode, they revealed the timeline of her death, which happened off screen.

The episode opened with a flashback scene of the day Monica died, which happened in the bedroom of her and Kayce’s (Luke Grimes) home on East Camp. In the scene, we see a nurse covering her body with a sheet after she died of cancer, with the text on screen reading, “One Year Ago.”
Later on, Kayce and Tate (Breckin Merrell) mourn Monica at her grave, with Tate being upset Kayce was going to miss the ceremony commemorating the anniversary of her death.
“I came out here hoping that Mom would cheer me up,” Tate says. “She usually does.”
“Hard to believe it’s been a year,” Kayce said. “I know how you’re feeling. Losing your mom’s put a hole in my heart that will never heal.”
In the episode, Kayce does end up going to the ceremony, and there was a surprise cameo from Yellowstone actor Rudy Ramos, who returned as Monica’s grandfather, Felix Long.
The trio stood for Monica’s ceremony, and Kayce reveals he’s been hanging on to her favorite necklace for the past year.
“Maybe it’s time I start letting go,” he says as the episode ended.
Previously, the Marshals showrunner explained why Monica was killed off for the spinoff series. He also teased there’s potential for Kelsey to possibly return in a flashback or hallucination.
