Quentin Tarantino is not holding back his thoughts on the current state of Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Pulp Fiction recently shared a brutally honest assessment of modern movies with Sight & Sound magazine, via Variety.

Quentin argued that many recent releases fail to capture the magic that first made him fall in love with cinema. He said he finds it increasingly difficult to enjoy contemporary films without becoming distracted by what he sees as major flaws.

“Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid s— usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood,” the director said. “These days, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity.”

The director compared today’s film landscape to a decade he had previously criticized.

“By comparison the movies of the last six years make the ’80s seem like the ’30s,” he said.

He did point out a few recent projects he enjoyed, such as Steven Spielberg‘s 2021 adaptation of West Side Story and Kevin Costner‘s Horizon: An American Saga.

Quentin added that he hasn’t seen many films that have “really held me in its grip” that he used to feel so often and that “these days I’d rather read a book.”

He also reserved special praise for one recent movie: Joe Carnahan‘s Netflix crime thriller The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Calling it “a suspenseful new movie,” Quentin said it “did grab me and held me for its entire duration.”

“The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways. The whole package worked for me: Carnahan‘s direction, the splendid cast, the look of the film (courtesy of cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz),” he said.

In case you missed it, Quentin fired back at Rosanna Arquette earlier this year after she called him out for his frequent usage of a racial slur in his scripts.

Barbra Streisand is set to be honored at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, but she will no longer be attending the ceremony.

The 84-year-old icon will sadly not be there to accept her honorary Palme d’Or at the closing ceremony of the film festival due to a knee injury.

“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” she shared in a statement, via Variety.

“But I am deeply honored to receive the honorary Palme d’Or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.”

“I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire — and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved. While I regret that I can’t be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year,” the statement continues.

“My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.”

The tribute will still happen on May 23.

Iris Knobloch, Thierry Frémaux and the entire festival team send Barbra Streisand their warmest wishes for a prompt recovery,” the festival said in a press release.

Barbra will be the third person to get an honorary Palme d’Or in 2026, including Peter Jackson and John Travolta.

If you missed it, Jane Fonda recently questioned why Barbra got to do Robert Redford‘s In Memoriam tribute at the 2026 Oscars, when she worked with him more often.
