The live-action movie from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios, based on the iconic franchise, will hit U.S. theaters on Friday (June 5).
Here’s the official synopsis: “In Masters of the Universe, director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.

The Los Angeles Times says: “Leto’s grumbling Brit-inflected baritone is an unrecognizable concoction of trilled r’s and plummy vowels — and the best performance he’s done in years.”
Slant gave it 1.5 out of 4, writing: “The film buries its heartening Barbie-style deconstruction under every terrible action-comedy instinct plaguing modern blockbuster filmmaking.”
The New York Post gave it 3 out of 4, saying: ‘No, this decidedly summer flick, directed by Travis Knight, was made solely for your amusement. It’s fun, helium light and doesn’t have a single thought in its dumb head.”
Associated Press gives it 2 out of 4, saying: “The movie might have worked better if it had just gone full Saturday morning cartoon with fewer self-deprecating jokes. But that would have required more conviction about what everyone was making in the first place.”
IndieWire gave it a C+, saying: “Galitzine isn’t the comedic tour de force that Gosling was in the “Barbie” movie, but he’s sweet and vacuous in a way that beautifully suits a story about a blond idiot trying to wrestle Olympus away from a power-mad skeleton.”
Boston Globe gives it a 2.5 out of 4, writing: “The result is a watchable, if overlong, replica of the “He-Man” cartoon. A film made with this much love would have been right up my alley when I was 13. Alas, I’m no longer a teenager.”
Guardian gave it a 2 out of 5, saying: “There’s just too much distracting confusion here — from Galitzine’s unsure performance to the script’s swirl of competing tones to the very question of why this needed to exist — for it to transport us as we both hope and expect.”
USA Today gave it 3 out of 4, saying: “There’s enough infectious energy and heart to give this sugar-bombed throwback a mainstream appeal more sizable than Galitzine’s impressive deltoids.”
Variety says: ‘Travis Knight‘s film is so loaded with jokes about its own out-of-time uncoolness that it occasionally seems to be apologizing for its very existence.”
Empire gave it 3 out of 5, saying: “A delightfully silly film for a perfectly stupid franchise. It could have had a few sharper lines and more narrative drive, but this should still win over a new generation of He-fans.”
