Wheat berries are the whole, unprocessed kernel of the wheat plant, which makes them a whole grain. Wheat berries offer more fiber and antioxidants than other forms of refined or processed wheat, and they can support a healthier gut, a stronger heart, and more.
Editor’s Note: There’s very little research out there on wheat berries themselves. However, there are plenty of studies on whole grains generally. The following benefits come from those studies, so they’re true for all whole grains—wheat berries included.
1. A More Diverse Gut Microbiome
Whole grains like wheat berries have a beneficial effect on your gut microbiome, the collection of trillions of bacteria that live in your gastrointestinal tract.
Research shows that people who eat more whole grains have greater growth of good bacteria in their gut and greater microbiome diversity as compared to those who eat mostly refined grains, such as white bread or rice.
This likely has to do with the higher fiber content of wheat berries and other whole grains. Fiber supports beneficial gut bacteria and has links to better digestion. Wheat berries have about 6 grams of fiber per one-fourth cup, while refined wheat loses most of its fiber during processing—a whole cup of white bread flour has just 3.3 grams of fiber, for example.
2. More Stable Blood Sugar
When you eat refined carbohydrates like white bread or white rice, your body breaks them down quickly. This leads to a spike in blood sugar, often followed by a drop.
On the other hand, whole grains like wheat berries break down more slowly in the body. This slower digestion means that sugar enters your bloodstream at a steadier pace, and your overall blood sugar stays more stable.
Even among whole grains, less processed options like wheat berries may be best for blood sugar. A 2020 study found that participants with type 2 diabetes had lower post-meal blood sugar spikes if they ate whole grains that were less processed and not as finely milled.
3. Improved Heart Health
Whole grains like wheat berries have a well-established link to heart health—their fiber, antioxidants, and other plant compounds may help lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation, both of which are key risk factors for heart disease.
A 2022 study followed more than 200,000 people for over two decades, and found that eating one serving of whole grains daily was linked to a 7% lower risk of coronary heart disease. Plus, people who ate the most whole grains had a 23% lower heart disease risk than those who ate the least.
Research also shows that less processed whole grains are better for protecting heart health than more processed ones. This could be a reason to choose wheat berries, an unprocessed grain, over other whole grain options.
4. Better Blood Pressure
Wheat berries and other whole grains are linked to a lower risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), a condition where the force of blood against the artery walls stays high over time.
Eating whole grains boosts your intake of magnesium and potassium, which are two micronutrients that help the body maintain healthy blood pressure. Plus, whole grains like wheat berries are great sources of fiber, which has also been associated with healthier blood pressure levels.
A 2025 review of studies found that people who had the highest whole grain consumption had a 26% lower risk of hypertension as compared to those who had the lowest intake.
5. Feeling Fuller for Longer
Wheat berries' high fiber content means they take a longer time for your body to digest. That slower digestion keeps you feeling full for longer after eating.
A 2021 review compared whole grain intake with refined grain intake in adults. People who ate whole grains reported significantly less hunger and greater fullness.
6. A Boost of Antioxidants
Your body produces molecules called free radicals that can damage your cells over time, leading to inflammation and chronic disease. However, antioxidants neutralize these cell-damaging compounds—and wheat berries are a good way to get them.
Wheat is a good source of antioxidants, particularly one called ferulic acid. It's found almost entirely in the outer layers—the bran and germ—of the wheat kernel, which are lost when wheat is processed into white flour. Wheat berries keep these outer parts of the kernel intact, which makes for a greater dose of ferulic acid.

There are lots of different types of wheat berries. Varieties can be hard or soft, red or white, or harvested in the winter or spring, and all of these different factors have an impact on their taste and nutrition. However, here's what you'll find in a one-fourth cup serving of Soft White Wheat Berries from the popular brand Bob's Red Mill:

How To Add Wheat Berries to Your Diet
Wheat berries are nutritious, but adding them to your diet can take a bit of patience. Dry wheat berries should be soaked overnight so they can soften. From there, you can simmer the wheat berries on the stovetop for around 45 to 60 minutes to cook them fully.
The cooking process is time-intensive (meaning batch cooking at the beginning of the week may be helpful). But once you have your cooked wheat berries, they work well in a wide range of meals.
Wheat berries can be added to chili, soups, or salads, where they absorb flavor and add a satisfying chew. Or, instead of using rice or quinoa, try wheat berries in your grain bowl or as a side dish next to your favorite protein. They can make an appearance on your breakfast table too, as a base for honey, nuts, and fresh fruit.
Just remember to increase your consumption of wheat berries slowly—quickly increasing your fiber intake can lead to bloating or other uncomfortable digestive symptoms in some people.

The February 2025 European semiconductor export restrictions sent markets into a two-day tailspin, wiping $1.3 trillion from global equities. For most investors, it was another stomach-churning reminder of how traditional portfolios falter when geopolitics overwhelms fundamentals.
But for a growing cohort of forward-thinking portfolio managers, it was validation. Their Strategic Scenario Portfolios—deliberately constructed to thrive during specific geopolitical events—delivered positive returns amid the chaos.

What Exactly Is a Strategic Scenario Portfolio?
A Strategic Scenario Portfolio (SSP) is an investment allocation designed to perform robustly during specific high-impact events—like trade wars, sanctions, regional conflicts, or supply chain disruptions.
Unlike conventional approaches that react to crises, SSPs anticipate them. They’re narrative-driven, built around specific, plausible scenarios that could reshape markets. They’re thematically concentrated, focusing on sectors positioned to benefit from that scenario rather than broad diversification. They maintain asymmetric balance, incorporating both downside protection and upside potential. And perhaps most importantly, they’re ready for deployment before markets fully price in the scenario.
Think of SSPs as portfolio “insurance policies” that also have the potential to deliver substantial alpha.
“Why didn’t I know about this before now?” SSPs aren’t new—institutional investors have quietly used similar approaches for decades. What’s new is systematizing this approach for broader application.
Real-World Proof: Two Case Studies That Speak for Themselves
Case Study #1: The 2018-2019 US-China Trade War
When trade tensions escalated in 2018, we constructed the “USChinaTradeWar2018” portfolio with a straightforward mandate: protect capital while capitalizing on trade-induced dislocations.
The portfolio allocated 25% to SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) as a core risk-off hedge. Another 20% went to Consumer Staples (VDC) for defensive positioning, while 15% was invested in Utilities (XLU) for stable returns and low volatility. The remaining 40% was distributed equally among Walmart (WMT), Newmont Mining (NEM), Procter & Gamble (PG), and Industrials (XLI), creating a balanced mix of defensive positioning with selective tactical exposure.
The results were remarkable. From May 2018 to December 2019, this portfolio delivered a total return of 30.2%, substantially outperforming the S&P 500’s 22.0%. More impressive than the returns, however, was the risk profile. The portfolio achieved a Sharpe ratio of 1.8 (compared to the S&P 500’s 0.6), demonstrating superior risk-adjusted performance. Its maximum drawdown was a mere 2.2%, while the S&P 500 experienced a 14.0% drawdown during the same period. With a beta of just 0.26 and alpha of 11.7%, this portfolio demonstrated precisely what SSPs are designed to deliver: outperformance with dramatically reduced correlation to broader market movements.

Case Study #2: The 2025 Tariff War Portfolio
Fast forward to January 2025. With new tariffs threatening global trade, we developed the “TariffWar2025” portfolio using a similar strategic framework but adapted to the current environment.
The core of the portfolio (50%) established a defensive foundation across Utilities (XLU), Consumer Staples (XLP), Healthcare (XLV), and Gold (GLD). We allocated 20% toward domestic industrial strength through Industrials (XLI) and Energy (XLE) to capture reshoring benefits and energy independence trends. Another 20% targeted strategic positioning with Lockheed Martin (LMT) benefiting from increased defense spending and Cisco (CSCO) offering exposure to domestic technology infrastructure with limited Chinese supply chain dependencies. The remaining 10% created balanced treasury exposure across long-term (TLT) and short-term (VGSH) treasuries to hedge against both economic slowdown and rising rates.
The results through Q1 2025 have been equally impressive. While the S&P 500 declined 4.6%, the TariffWar2025 portfolio generated a positive 4.3% return. Its Sharpe ratio of 8.4 indicates exceptional risk-adjusted performance, and remarkably, the portfolio experienced zero drawdown during a period when the S&P 500 fell by as much as 7.1%. With a beta of 0.20 and alpha of 31.9%, the portfolio again demonstrated the power of scenario-based investing in navigating geopolitical turbulence.

Why Traditional Portfolios Fail When You Need Them Most
Traditional portfolio construction relies heavily on assumptions that often crumble during times of geopolitical stress. Historical correlations, which form the backbone of most diversification strategies, routinely break during crises. Mean-variance optimization, a staple of modern portfolio theory, falters dramatically when markets exhibit non-normal distributions, which is precisely what happens during geopolitical events. And the broad diversification that works so well in normal times often converges in stressed markets, leaving investors exposed just when protection is most needed.
When markets fracture along geopolitical lines, these assumptions collapse spectacularly. Consider the March 2023 banking crisis: correlations between tech stocks and regional banks—historically near zero—suddenly jumped to 0.75.
