Rumer Willis Explains Why She Ended ‘Brutal’ Relationship with Daughter’s Father Derek Richard Thomas

If you didn’t know, the 37-year-old The House Bunny actress and the 31-year-old singer were first linked in May 2022 and welcomed their daughter Louetta in April 2023. In August 2024, Rumer confirmed that she and Derek had split up.

While appearing on the Wednesday (May 20) episode of The Inside Edit, Rumer opened up about why she and Derek called it quits.

Rumer told host Maeve Reilly that it was actually at her June 2024 wedding to Zach Quittman that made her realize she didn’t want to be with Derek anymore.

“Your wedding was a huge reckoning moment for me,” Rumer told Maeve. “I heard your vows and I just realized that the situation I was in was never going to look like that, no matter how much effort I put in.”

“And I was just watching you guys — just weeping, holding my child,” she continued, “and I just thought, you know what? I need to have more value for myself.”

Rumer added, “I need to go and like, leave, no matter how scared I am and find something that looks like this, because I want that.”

She went on to say that she was just starting to feel “back in her power again” after going through the breakup.

“It was really brutal and challenging,” Rumer said of her relationship with Derek. “And I’m so proud of myself, you know? I work hard and I show up for my kid and it’s such a privilege.”

“It’s such a privilege to be a mom,” she continued. “It makes me so happy.”

After saying that she’s grateful for what she’s learned from that experience, Rumer said that she has set higher standards for the next relationship she gets into. She also said that she’s manifesting getting married next year and having more kids.

“I’m gonna meet this wonderful man,” Rumer said of what she’s putting out in the universe for herself. “I can’t wait — I’m gonna have, like, seven more … I want to have like, eight kids. I’m so excited.”

Last month, Rumer hit back at criticism over still breastfeeding her now-3-year-old daughter.
