Mackenzie Phillips is reflecting on her struggles with addiction and sharing new details about her time on the set of One Day at a Time.
The 66-year-old actress spoke with Fox News in an interview published on Sunday (May 31), where she discussed her years starring as Julie Cooper on the hit Norman Lear sitcom and made claims about her experiences with Valerie Bertinelli.
According to Mackenzie, she and Valerie, who played Barbara Cooper on the series, used cocaine together during show’s run.
“So, this might surprise you that during lunch break, Valerie and I would drive to my house, get in the pool, drink wine and snort coke,” she revealed.
Mackenzie went on to note that Valerie has previously discussed the subject publicly.
“But Valerie talks about it openly, so it’s not like I’m pulling her covers or anything. The thing was that Valerie didn’t have the kind of addiction that I had; she didn’t have addiction.”
“And, you know, so we would do coke together in the dressing room and stuff,” she said. “I just happened to be the one that got caught. And thank God I got caught, you know?”
Mackenzie has spoken candidly over the years about her battle with substance abuse and addiction. During her time on One Day at a Time, those struggles reportedly led to her being fired from the series twice, first after the fifth season and again during the ninth and final season.
Earlier this year, singer Lola Young also spoke out about battling a cocaine addiction.
