Police search for car in student’s fatal crash

Minneapolis police are asking the public for help in locating the vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run crash that killed a University of St. Thomas senior last weekend.

Seham Hassen, 22, was struck and killed early Sunday while crossing Marshall Street near 16th Avenue in northeast Minneapolis. She later died at a hospital.

Organizers of an online fundraiser for Hassen’s family called her death “sudden and heartbreaking.”

“She was on track to graduate this May with her bachelor’s degree in public health, with hopes of continuing into the medical field so she could care for others and give back to her community,” they wrote. “That was who she was at her core — someone who wanted to heal, to serve, and to make a difference for people.”

Minneapolis police said Hassen was carrying a bag of food when she was struck by a car traveling at a high rate of speed just after 3 a.m. Sunday. The driver did not stop.

Police said they’re looking for a silver or gray four-door sedan with damage to the front left part of the car — including a buckled hood, a downward-facing left headlight, and a missing driver-side mirror.

Authorities said that car has been seen in Minneapolis, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale and St. Anthony.

Anyone with information on the car is asked to contact Minneapolis police by email at policetips@minneapolismn.gov, or by calling (612) 673-5845 to leave a voicemail.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through CrimeStoppers at (800) 222-TIPS, or online.

Hassen lived in Minneapolis and was a graduate of Robbinsdale Armstrong High School. Her funeral was held earlier this week.

“She had a gentle presence, a kind heart, and a way of making people feel seen, cared for, and valued,” organizers of the fundraiser for Hassen’s family wrote. “At just 22 years old, she was a loving daughter, a supportive sister, a caring aunt, and a deeply cherished friend. She brought so much joy and warmth into the lives of those around her, and her absence is deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.”
