Amazon is facing a proposed class-action suit that claims the company made early versions of its Fire TV Stick devices obsolete over time.
The plaintiff named in the suit, Bill Merewhuader, filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, said he purchased two second-generation Fire TV Stick devices from Best Buy in 2018, four years after the company debuted its first Fire TV Stick. Merewhuader said that a few years later, he experienced slower streaming speeds, difficulty navigating menus and long load times.
He eventually was unable to use the device. He purchased new Fire TV Sticks in 2024, according to the filing.
Merewhuader says in the complaint that Amazon intentionally made older devices perform poorly to spur hardware upgrades and “bricked” Fire TV devices “before the expiration of their useful life.”
A representative for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Lawyers for the plaintiff said they had no further comment beyond the legal complaint.
Streaming devices are getting older
Popular streaming devices from big tech companies have been around for nearly two decades. Apple debuted AppleTV in 2007, and Roku followed the next year. Google’s Chromecast, which evolved streaming devices from set-top boxes to plug-in dongles, launched in 2013. Amazon followed up the next year with its Fire TV box and plug-in stick, released later in 2014.
As earlier generations of devices from these tech companies age, it’s common for them to lose functionality, as they can’t run newer apps or access certain features. For instance, Apple’s first Apple TV box is all but inoperable today and was eventually replaced with Apple TV 4K streaming boxes.
The filing partly hinges on allegations that Amazon did not inform buyers that Fire TV Stick devices would lose functionality or become inoperable over time, and that the performance of early devices did not match the promises Amazon made in its marketing.
The proposed class action would be open to anyone who resides in the US and who still owns a first- or second-generation Fire TV Stick as of Jan. 1, 2023, or April 1, 2023, respectively.

Step1: Prepare active directory for configuration manager
a) Create the system management container:
Please navigate to the domain controller, load the ADSI file, and edit it. In the system OU, create a new object named ‘System Management.’
Complete the wizard, closing the ADSI editor. Grant control of the system to the configuration system server for the new system configurator object.
Choose the container and click next.
Enter the name of system management and click next
b)Complete the wizard browser and close the ADSI editor.
Now pass the system control to the configuration system server to the newly created system configurator object, this can be done by using the navigation, choose the folder -> existing object -> create the new objects.
Check all the boxes (use the right tick) and complete the browser wizard.
Step2: Extend the system configuration Schema:
Navigate to \SMSSetup\bin\x64, accessing the folder controlling the system schema rules. Ensure the account used is a member of the AD admins’ group. Run Extadsch.exe as an admin and verify the successful extension in the Extadsch.log file.
Log into Extadsch.log file-> it will take you to the root, C: Drive. Check for the entry then you will notify with a message as “successfully extended to the active schema director”.

To check the activity of extadsch.exe -> go to the directory file “ConfigMgr_ad_schema.idf” that is located in the same folder in the system.
Step 3: Install the Site server prerequisites:
Essential SCCM site server management components include BITS, Remote Differential Compression, .NET Framework 3.5, and IIS components.

Step 4: Install the window assessments and Deploy kits (Windows ADK):
Download ADK 8.1 and follow the installation steps, including running the adksetup.exe file, accepting licenses, and choosing components like User State Migration Tools and Windows Deployment Tools.
a. Run the executable file adksetup.exe file -> accept the license agreements -> it will download and install the.Net framework 4.5.

Step 5: Install the SQL server:
For the SCCM database, install SQL Server 2012 by running the setup.exe file and following the installation wizard.
Run the executable file -> setup.exe
Install stand-alone SQL database server
Click OK-> it will open the new browser;
Install the product key -> run in evaluation mode -> click next
Accept the SQL license agreement -> click next -> add any product updates-> click next -> now it’s time to choose the installation features -> click next
Set SQL to run with adding an appropriate domain name, network service, and local system account.
Step6: Install the SCCM R12:
Execute the splash.hta file and follow the guided installation process. It includes selecting the primary site installation, entering the license key, and configuring SQL database server settings.
