  • The 30-second sit-to-stand chair test measures lower-body strength, balance, and mobility.
  • Average chair stand test scores vary with age and gender.
  • Regular strength training and daily movement can help improve your chair stand score.

The 30-second sit-to-stand (or chair stand) test is a simple way to measure older adults' leg strength, endurance, and functional fitness. By comparing your score to others your age, you can identify if you're at a greater risk of dangerous falls or other mobility issues.

What Is the Sit-To-Stand Chair Test?

The chair stand test is simple—it measures how many times you can fully stand up from a chair and sit back down during a 30-second period without assistance.

To complete the test accurately, you'll need to:

  • Sit and stand up from a standard-height chair with a straight back and no armrests
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor
  • Cross your arms over your chest

Researchers developed the 30-second chair stand test in 1999 as a way to assess seniors' lower-body strength. Since then, the tool has become widely adopted by physical therapists and healthcare professionals to test seniors' fall risk and to measure strength in people with osteoarthritis.

How Many Sit-To-Stand Reps Should You Be Able To Do?

Expected scores for the chair stand test vary by age and sex. In the original 1999 study that established the test, most moderately-active participants were able to complete the following number of sit-to-stand reps in 30 seconds:

  • Ages 60–64: 12–17 for women; 14–19 for men
  • Ages 65–69: 11–16 for women; 12–18 for men
  • Ages 70–74: 10–15 for women; 12–17 for men
  • Ages 75–79: 10–15 for women; 11–17 for men
  • Ages 80–84: 9–14 for women; 10–15 for men
  • Ages 85–89: 8–13 for women; 8–14 for men
  • Ages 90+: 4–11 for women; 7–12 for men

Healthcare providers usually use the 30-second chair test in older adults. However, one study found that healthy adults aged 19–35 were able to complete about 33 sit-to-stand reps on average.

Everyone's body is different—people may score lower or higher due to factors such as their activity level, body size, medical history, and other factors. But in general, people who score below the range for their age may have balance issues or a greater fall risk.

Why the Chair Stand Test Matters for Your Health

The goal of the 30-second sit-to-stand chair test is to assess participants' leg strength and balance capabilities.

This gives valuable insight into how a person is aging. Research shows that lower-body strength plays an important role in maintaining independence and quality of life. That's because strong leg muscles support everyday activities, such as getting out of bed, walking safely, and carrying groceries.

On the other hand, weak leg muscles can make walking more difficult, reduce mobility, and increase the risk of falls. Falls are the leading cause of injury and injury-related death in adults over 65.

Beyond providing a measure of older adults' leg strength, research also suggests that the 30-second sit-to-stand test may offer insight into long-term health more broadly. A recent review found that better performance on the test may be associated with a lower risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, physical disability, depression, and dementia.

How To Improve Your Chair Stand Score

Many factors can affect your sit-to-stand test score, including joint pain, chronic health conditions, and more. But if you're scoring below average for your age group, you may want to work on building your balance and lower-body strength. The good news is research shows that consistent strength training can improve older adults' chair stand performance in as little as 12 weeks.

Here are some general strategies for boosting muscle strength and endurance to improve your sit-to-stand chair test score:

  • Practice the sit-to-stand movement at home: Research shows that doing frequent sit-to-stand movements builds muscle strength and makes the movement easier for physically frail, older adults.
  • Strengthen your quads, glutes, and hamstrings: Working these main muscles of the lower body can help you build the strength necessary to improve on the sit-to-stand test. Resistance bands and exercises such as squats and lunges can help target these muscle groups.
  • Work on your core: Research shows core strength training is particularly useful for seniors when it comes to improving balance, which can help with the chair stand test. Exercises to try include quadrupeds (bird-dogs), standing chops, or knee planks.
  • Add balance and stability work: Balance-focused activities like yoga and tai chi may improve stability and coordination, supporting safer movement. Tai chi in particular may help reduce the risk of falls in older adults, research shows.
  • Stay consistent: Lower-body strength naturally declines with age, especially after age 50. Regular physical activity—including strength training two to three times per week—can help preserve muscle mass and support mobility.

If walking becomes difficult, if you fall frequently, or otherwise notice your balance start to worsen, it's crucial to talk to your doctor. They can evaluate possible causes and recommend exercises, physical therapy, medication switches, or other methods to lower your risk of falling.
