Olivia Rodrigo‘s new song “Purple” is an integral song to the overall storytelling over her new album.
The 23-year-old Sour singer-songwriter’s latest record, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, dropped on Friday (June 12), and she says the song “purple” is “the turning point” of the story.
“You kissed my neck / Made our paths intersect ’til the two lines formed a circle / And I melt with you, your red and my blue / Now I see the world in purple, purple,” she sings on the track.
Olivia says the song started “as a love song.”
“There’s a version of it in my computer that’s just like a pure beautiful love song. And we kind of wrote about it and then forgot about it and six months later we picked it back up and we’re like, ‘oh, let’s see if we can produce this in sort of a cooler way,’” she explained while talking to host Mikey Piff for a SiriusXM Front Row.
Later, Olivia says they added guitars and drums. As the song morphed “into something else,” it inspired them to write different lyrics, which is how we got a piece that is a little darker than a typical love song as it really highlights what can happen when two people become so entangled they start losing their individual identities.
She says “purple” is “that’s “sort of like the turning point and is sort of where everything starts to unravel as we say.”
The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series alum also says it became one of her “favorite songs on the record.”
“I really love it. And it just plays a super integral role in like the track listing as well, in the story of, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” Olivia concluded.
