What I Wish I Knew About Navigating Postpartum Depression as a First-Time Mom

If I could talk to myself before I had my son, I would tell myself how incomprehensibly hard being a mother will be. That it will be lonely, brutal, relentless, and all-consuming. But I would have told myself that it would also be soul-crushingly beautiful, that it would rip my heart open, that I would experience love and joy deeper than I ever thought possible. I would tell myself that I was strong enough to endure it. I would tell myself that no matter what, even through the darkest days, even through the loneliest nights, I would never give up on myself.

After giving birth to my son, Jade, last May, I experienced postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum anxiety (PPA). Although PPD is often thought of as the “baby blues,” it’s a serious mood disorder that can cause intense and persistent feelings of sadness, worry, and fatigue.

The Unknown

During pregnancy, I felt like PPD was the bogeyman. It was this mysterious thing you just hoped you didn’t get. In reality, 1 in 8 new moms experience symptoms of PPD to various degrees. I wish I knew how common PPD was among new mothers and how likely it was that I would experience some degree of PPD or PPA symptoms in early motherhood.

It seems obvious how common PPD can be when you think about it. You’re undergoing a massive, monumental life transition. At the same time, you’re recovering from major surgery, while also experiencing a massive hormone drop, while also keeping a human alive, while also potentially being their only source of food. And you’re doing this while navigating a horrific political and social climate that does not support mothers.

Instead of PPD being something you “fingers-crossed, hope I don’t get,” it should be seen as something you very well could experience.

Developing Postpartum Depression

I had already dealt with anxiety at various times in my life, so my therapist and I had discussed the potential for me to have PPA. When anxious symptoms like hypervigilance, rumination, intrusive thoughts, and general feelings of unease began, I knew right away that I was experiencing PPA.

But then I started feeling like every day was hard, like every day was an uphill battle. That’s when I started talking to my therapist about PPD. Otherwise, no other doctors really discussed the possibility of having PPD aside from the short survey you’re given at the OBGYN for your six-week check-up.

Managing My Symptoms

Even when I knew I had PPD, I couldn’t see the distinction between what was depression and what was reality. I knew I wasn’t feeling great, but I didn’t realize just how bad I felt until I was on the other side of it.

I would wake up every morning and feel like I was preparing for the hardest day of my life. I’d count down the minutes until I could go to sleep at night, despite knowing I would have multiple wake-ups with my baby throughout the night. It was like a storm cloud was over me at all times.

Right away, I started talk therapy for my depression. I also leaned into my routine and my family support. I made sure I was getting ready and getting outside every single day. I talked to my husband about how I was feeling each day. And I spent as much time as possible with my son. Everyone told me to get space from him and take time for myself, but that only made me feel worse. I found that I felt best when I was with my son.

How I’ve Been Changed

I lost some of my identity during postpartum, and I’m still looking for myself some days. The truth is, I won’t ever be “her” again—the person I was on May 13 before my son was born. But I’m someone new, someone who is kinder, braver, stronger, more empathetic, more courageous, and more loving than she was. Some days I’ve never known myself less, but never loved myself more.

I am constantly looking for joy, looking for hope, looking for ways to come back to me. I don’t know that I will ever stop missing who I was a year ago, but I feel very sure that I am better now than I was before. I don’t think it’s about finding yourself again; it’s about loving the pieces of who you were that are messily and haphazardly glued together with the pieces of who you are now.
